NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER
I finished out my deer hunting season by spending the last week of the D-7 season with my friend Louie hunting Kaiser and the Mt. Tom area. We stayed at Louie’s place near Shaver Lake. He got a fork horn on our first day of hunting. He harvested it within about the same 100 yard area where I harvested mine last year except his was on the uphill side of the road and mine was on the downhill side. Mine was a pretty tough drag but I just slide Louie’s down the hill. Louie has had back surgery and now sports a pacemaker so I did the honors. The Moab, Utah hunt was a blank for all of us except Louie who harvested a fork horn there also. Jim and I never even saw a buck though we saw a lot of doe. I am going back next year and Brother Mike and Cousin George from Michigan and I will be putting in as a group. BM and George hunted the La Sal’s a couple of times in high school and we are gong to do it again as we are all past the BIG 60 and it may be our last hunt together. I guess I will just have to survive the winter on domestic meat which seems to make the wife very happy.
The new lighted skeet range continues to get a lot of use. We have most of the problems solved but do have trouble with persons who use the Clay Delay voice release for the skeet setup leaving the sensitivity control, (the round dial which turns it on), turned to the on position when they finish shooting causing the 12 volt battery to discharge. Please shooters, turn it counterclockwise until it clicks. The antennas for the skeet receiver have not been purchased as I have not had time. If there is more than one shooter it is faster to use the manual release.
Margaret and her helper have dug out the sewer line where the root was lifting it for repairs. It wasn’t just one root. She called me stating that there were numerous roots lifting the line and she was using an ax to cut them. I took her my reciprocating saw which made it a lot easier and she got all of them out post haste. She feels we should replace about ten feet of the line which was split. The trench was left open so if there are any volunteers we can get the appropriate amount of plastic sewer pipe and the connections and get er done.
The NRA sanctioned small bore match scheduled for November 14/th was cancelled for lack of interest. There will not be any matches in December and January with matches resuming on the second Saturday of each month in February. For more information you can call Tim Stone @ 559-352-9397. We tried to get an NRA Grant to buy five Kimber small bore rifles to use as loaners for persons wishing to try their hand at small bore shooting. We did not get the proper paperwork completed and sent in by the November 1/st deadline. I have not been able to find any other grants to attain the rifles. CMP offers affiliated clubs, we are affiliated, a payment plan of 20% down and payments over several years. I will see if there are other avenues that we can pursue this through or we can just wait until next year and do a Friends of the NRA Grant. We have not heard as of this newsletter as to whether Kevin Suie has had the possible two National Records he shot at the CRPA Junior and Open Metric Prone Match at LSC in October verified. He shot these records in 50 meter open sights and 50 meter any sights classes.
We are doing some major repairs to the living quarters used for the Manager. We could not get any volunteers with the knowledge to do some of these repairs so we hired it done. I hope most of the work will be done by the December Meeting. Ben Nelson is doing the work and he and I went to ABC Supply in Goshen to get some aluminum roofing to match that which was put on the mobile home several years ago. People had walked on it in a couple of areas and did not stay on the areas where there was support so it is now concaved in those areas. It needs replaced so water will not stand and seep through the ceiling. These are 36” wide with a 130 degree flat rib on 10 ½ centers. They only dealt in dwelling types of roofing’s including metal but they said what we had was for commercial roofs and they did not handle it. We then went to Pacific Supply which we had seen on our way in. We needed to zigzag around as it was in an awkward area but they could order what we needed. The lady helping us was interested in Ben’s accent as she was from the South. Ben is from Alabama. The particular style of commercial roofing we have had to be made in LA and shipped to Goshen. It was just over $600 for 90 running feet but $125 of that was the shipping. We had to match the ribs so we would not need to replace all of the roofing. After the metal is laid Ben will apply a coat of white rubberized sealant which is designed for this purpose. I was gong to order it at the same place but Ben said he could get it at Home Depot cheaper than what they had it priced at. Ben is a roofer by trade and has used this product before. He said it will help keep it cooler and the material will expand and contract with the temperature to alleviate cracking.
We have purchased five gallons of the green paint to repaint the shooting benches and tables on the rifle and pistol ranges. Anyone wanting to do some painting just let Margaret know. We also purchased five gallons of white paint. Margaret had found a almost full five gallon can of white in the shop. She has been painting the trees, posts and some of the other areas to brighten up the Club.
Margaret had a member adjust the clutch on the JD tractor as it was in need of adjustment. I did not get the name of that person. Sorry.
We really need to start getting some Karmex put out for weed control as the rains are finally coming. Let’s not wait until the weeds are 12 inches high to control them. Get em while they are young.
It is now time to start preparing the ballots for the election in April for Directors. The ballot must be out by the end of January so the stockholders of record will have them 60 days prior to the election as stated in the by laws. Larry Collar and Ed Brixey have both decided not to run after serving 5 years. Jim Harp has decided not to run also as he has been on the Board a very long time—I remember something about “parting the Red Sea”. Joking aside, thanks guys for the service. I may also opt out after six years but I haven’t decided for sure as of now. Jim Shaver has expressed interest in learning the Treasurers job unless someone else is looking for the job. Larry can train anyone taking it and we use Quicken. The Club owns the laptop so whoever takes over the job can keep our records off of their personal computer.
UPDATE; We will be having the CCW, (concealed carry weapons), classes monthly at LSC starting in 2010. Warren Parker from the Kings County Sheriffs will be the instructor. You must already have a CCW or have been granted the licensee by the Sheriffs Office or Hanford PD to take this class. This is not a class to get your CCW but a qualification class for those who have it and need to do the maintenance qualifications. I want to be VERY clear here so people do not sign up thinking by taking the class they will get a CCW. The schedule is listed below.
Tim Stone and Chuck Wynn will be conducting an NRA Basic Pistol Class on January 8/th from 6:00 PM until 10: PM for the classroom and the 9/th from 9:00 AM until the shooting qualifications are completed. This class is limited to ten,(10) shooters. The fee is $70 for both days. Non LSC members must pay a $30, 3-day range fee which can be transferred into an $80 yearly membership if done within those three days. A full membership includes spouse, kids and grandkids under the age of 18.The participant who has received the permission from the proper authorities to get a CCW permit will have completed the necessary qualifications upon completing this class successfully. Contact Tim Stone @ 559-352-7397 to reserve a place in the class or for further information.
David Sorrick from Appleseed has scheduled four more 2- day Appleseed shoots at LSC for the following year. The Board agreed to donate the required ranges. The dates are; April 17/th and 18/th 2010—June 5/th and 6/th 2010--- August 28/th and 29/th 2010 and October 23/rd and 24/th 2010. These shoots all start at 8:00 AM and require about 500 rounds of ammunition if you shoot both days. You can sign up for one or two days. Most shooters use .22 caliber rim fire as the cost of center fire ammo has really gone up. You get a discount for both days and can qualify for the marksman patch. Information will be posted at the Clubhouse bulletin board and the range house in advance. It is $45 per day or $70 for both days with kids shooting free.
I have been corresponding with Cheri Scazighini, (and I thought Kuckenbaker was tough), and we are arranging a “no lead shoot” at LSC for late February or early March. She will provide copper bullet ammunition that complies with the California Condor enhancement areas for members to try in the most popular calibers. I have been told, but it is not verified, that she will exchange up to three,(3). Boxes of 29 cartridges for those present and turning in lead based ammunition. As we get closer to a set date information will be posted here and at the Clubhouse bulletin board and the range house.
UPDATE; I just received an email from Cheri that she would like to do the no-lead demonstration on February 27/th 2010. She also said that she believes they have now changed the “swap out” of ammunition to one, (1) box per shooter. I will update this schedule as the time nears or if dates change.
The last Hunter Safety course had a full house with 4-H members having reserved the class and if they did not make a full class of 25 it was a first come first serve basis for the remainder of the seats. Michael Villasenor was the instructor. I have not had any feedback as to how many passed as this was the one day web based course where the student had to study on his/her own and he just gave the test and review. We have had a large failure rate in the past with this format as persons taking the test did not prepare properly. The next class will be sometime in January I am told but I have not had any response from my emails to Michael and do not have a date or format as this needs to be sent to the webmaster soon. Call the Club after the Holidays @ 559-924-7240 and check on the status of the upcoming classes. If no answer just leave a message and phone number.
